Chapter Fifteen

One of the problems with being stuck in time was there was no one to talk to.

No Fang. No Kingsley. No Alchemist. Well, not the Alchemist who I knew and loved. I even missed Allison. Okay, I really missed Allison. I would have even taken Mary Lou. Not the ideal sounding board for all things paranormal, but she could do in a pinch.James knew my secret, of course, but the last thing the busy surgeon needed was to be burdened with my problems. Besides, I’d just done a nice job of wiping his memory clean of what I was. I didn’t want to have to do that again. I didn’t want to make a habit of invading the sanctity of my friends’ minds.

So, I found myself perched on a church steeple, arms wrapped around a sturdy wooden cross, staring down at a large home of particular interest. And, yeah, so much for the crucifix theory. Not sure why God would hate me. Or Jesus, either. Besides, there was a very, very good chance I had met God, hadn’t I? In a Denny’s a few years ago. A man named Jack who seemed to know what I was... and seemed to also have all the answers to life’s questions. I wondered if Jack was around now.

I shook my head at the absurdity of it all, and focused again at the rambling, tree-lined estate below. The sun had set hours ago. I had spent my time with Maggie, shopping for supplies, stopping in quaint shops, and, if I was being honest with myself... saying goodbye to Richmond, my home of the past few months. One way or another, I sensed my stay here was coming to an end.

It had to be. It was time.

But not quite yet...

After all, there was a killer at large. A killer, I suspected, who just might be from the future too. Unfortunately, I had no way of knowing when plastic aglets had been invented, but I was willing to bet my immortal soul that they didn’t appear until well into the next century. I mean, they needed machines to put those suckers on, right?

Made sense to me.

And if my new vampire friend from the future had killed Bucky and the Confederate spy, Michael Tanner, what did that mean? I didn’t know, but I had no doubt that he was also the cause of death for the second confederate officer—the one found with a similar wound on his neck and his head also bashed in. Three deaths, all Confederate-related. One was a confirmed spy. One was a house slave to the Confederate State’s first president. That Bucky would have had knowledge gleaned from his proximity to Jefferson Davis, I had no doubt.

Had Michael Tanner—and the other dead Confederate officer, who might very well have been a spy himself—been following the vampire and met an unfortunate end? Possibly. So what did that mean? Was the vampire an agent for the Union? Was the vampire a time traveling Civil War spy?

I rubbed my head, then wrapped my arms loosely around the roughly hewed stem of the cross.
